Sibbald Fen

A UNESCO Ecohydrology DemoSite

Each UNESCO ecohydrology demonstration site aims to apply Ecohydrology principles and solutions to solve both social and environmental issues. Sibbald Fen, located in beautiful Kananaskis Country, Alberta which is part of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, became a DemoSite in 2024.

At Sibbald Fen, we are studying how beaver ecosystem engineering in peatlands can create “slow flow”, carbon-storing environments critical for building climate resilience, reversing environmental degradation, and supporting biodiversity.
